On November 23rd and 24th of 2012, Fredericton community members convened at the Fredericton Convention Centre for The Great Gathering – An Open Space Forum, hosted by Greater Fredericton Social Innovation. On the first day, some of the topics relating to poverty that were discussed included: surplus food management, transportation for low-income and shift workers, perceptions of the homeless and panhandlers, homes and jobs for the homeless, and affordable housing On the second day, these issues were combined and discussed under the heading of ‘affordable housing'. Many great observations and suggestions were put forward, but these have yet to be developed into an actionable and comprehensive anti-poverty strategy. The directors of ecoFredericton feel that there needs to be a follow-up to the Great Gathering on the issue of poverty, and that all local groups working in this area of concern ought to be invited to find a unified approach that coordinates their individual efforts.
